So, when Ireland's largest public broadcaster, Radio Telefis Eireann, needed a fault resilient solution for its file sharing needs it turned to Codec.
RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) is Ireland's national public-service media organisation. RTÉ sits at the heart of Irish life and at the centre of an increasingly interdependent Irish media sector.
Our well known experience with Novell products (first Novell Business Expert partner in Ireland) and our in-house expertise of our Master Certified NetWare Engineer and Certified NetWare Engineers assured RTE that Codec was best placed to carry out the task at hand. In order to replace an aging system based on mirrored NetWare 4.11 SFT-III servers, Codec designed and implemented a three-node cluster based around NetWare 5.1 Cluster Services.
The solution had to comply with an exacting business continuity plan drawn up by the customer. This plan meant that the file service had to withstand the loss of an entire building. Our solution provided for this by using the advanced NetWare Storage Services (NSS) file system mirroring feature to mirror data between the two Fibre Channel storage arrays located in separate buildings. The design can survive a failure of multiple power supplies, NICs, CPU's, Fibre Channel switch, disks, array controllers, entire storage arrays or an entire building and still function at 100% capability. In order to further protect the data stored on the cluster, a Fibre Channel backup system was incorporated into the solution.
Within a short period of time after commissioning the cluster, over 1,200 RTE user home directories and the data from the servers were successfully migrated. RTE also intends to extend the solution in the future by adding extra servers to the cluster. Codec has designed the solution to allow the customer to scale out in this way.

“Codec provided the expertise to move RTE from ageing mirrored servers using Netware 4 to a high availability clustered environment using Netware 5.1 and NDS 8. This was designed and implemented without any downtime for the users. The cluster hosts file services and DHCP for the organization. Printing is in the process of being migrated to the cluster. Codec also designed and implemented client build and application rollout using Codec. We are delighted with the efficient expert way that these systems were designed and implemented by Codec.”
