Learn how jumping to the cloud is far more than getting your Outlook accounts online and how Codec can empower Irish businesses to achieve real digital transformation

The success of Ireland’s Microsoft partner network has been another striking feature of the transition to cloud, one that was not entirely expected when the world’s biggest software company made the shift from selling on-premise software to hosted applications. Codec, the 2017 Microsoft Country Partner of the Year, has thrived with the change.
“We’ve transitioned ourselves very effectively,” said Richard Nolan, director of cloud technology. “Today we’re a more profitable company than we’ve ever been and seeing huge growth.”
In the first rush to the cloud, Codec was building pre-built stacks of servers and storage for large companies, but that side of business became less important as the Microsoft proposition developed. A significant change has been the Microsoft CSP (Cloud Solution Provider) programme, which uses partner relationships to simplify software licensing. Codec is a tier 1 CSP, which means it can provision the licences directly from the Microsoft data centre for clients and has the consultancy skill-sets to ensure they’re optimised.
Nolan believes the new licensing model will impact the way businesses function in 2018 and help maximise the cloud.
“You’re going to see more people engage more meaningfully in digital transformation — and that’s what we promote,” he said. “Moving email from on-premise to Office wasn’t digital transformation, but what can happen now will be.”
Codec also won the 2017 Dynamics 365 Partner of the Year from Microsoft, highlighting expertise in a platform that seamlessly brings finance, sales automation and CRM together in the cloud. But integrated applications are a small part of the digital journey that Codec wants to take clients on.
Nolan believes it’s also about making established Microsoft applications more engaging, and there’s a new tool to make it happen.
“SharePoint and Skype are products that have been around for a few years, but they haven’t really taken off in the way that they should. That will change with Teams,” he said.
Microsoft Teams was properly launched in 2017, an application that looks at first like another group chat application. Nolan explained that it’s much more powerful and can assume the role of digital hub for all types of conversations, content and applications.
“It’s the skin you put over SharePoint and Skype, a social media interface for the enterprise that will make it really easy to access other applications and their underlying technologies,” he said.
The cumulative effect of all this activity has been to turn the perception of Microsoft around, according to Nolan, who attributes the change to the leadership of chief executive Satya Narayana Nadella.
“I’m a big fan. You couldn’t have had a better man at the helm; he’s done an unbelievable job and made Microsoft a cool company again,” he said.
