Codec were delighted to celebrate International Women’s day 2019, #IWD2019, on the morning of Friday 8th March by hosting a staff breakfast in the elevated setting of Sophies bar on the top floor of the Dean Hotel in Dublin.
The theme of this years International Women’s Day was #Balanceforbetter. Everyone has a part to play in building an exciting future in a gender balanced world. This balance drives a better working world.
Hosted by Fiona Daly, Director of Legal & Finance in Codec, this was Codec’s 3rd year to actively mark this significant day and highlights the continued desire and commitment of the management of Codec in recognising the contribution that its female staff have made in the growth of the organisation.
Attended by over 40 Codec employees (male and female), the breakfast was only one of the events held to mark the occasion – employees in our Galway, Belfast and Polish offices also marked the day with their own events.
According to Fiona, “about 30% of the Codec workforce are female. We have several women in key positions but it’s an ongoing objective for us to continue to address this gender balance into the future in an industry that is traditionally male dominated. International Women’s Day encourages us all to reflect on the importance of equality, to celebrate the successes of women. We actively encourage a more balanced approach for all our employees in achieving a good work life balance – whether that is through flexible working hours to facilitate school runs or remote working options” she added.
Highlighting the theme of #balanceforbetter for 2019, Fiona recognised that the struggle for women’s rights is not exclusive to women. She quoted Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights”.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8 every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights. After the Socialist Party of America organized a Women’s Day on February 28, 1909, in New York, the 1910 International Socialist Woman’s Conference suggested a Women’s Day be held annually.
